A new TV documentary, due to be aired in the Summer, will focus on the growing popularity of exotic pets. The programme, entitled Essex Jungle, will be filmed at pet shops across Essex and broadcast on channel 5.

A recent report commissioned by an insurance provider suggests that destructive pets could cost their owners an average of 690 per year on household damage. This equates to a massive 3.3 billion in the UK. Confused.com has launched a petition to ensure that accidental pet damage is covered by most home insurers. Click here to view the petition.

In his latest online blogfor the Telegraph Pete Wedderburn has spoken out against cloned animals. Entitles, 'Read our lips: consumers don't want to eat cloned animals' he writes that "Animals are sentient beings, not just clusters of cells without consciousness or sensation... The only motive for producing cloned animals is to create more profit; animal welfare should not be compromised in this way for pure commercial gain."

A recent article on the BBC's website shows how many experts are worried about the rising number of exotic pets. Quoting Matt Brash, a government zoo inspector, the piece suggests that laws over which wild animals can be kept as pets need to be changed. Species being kept in worrying conditions include Meerkats, Poison Dart Frogs, large tortoises and Marmoset Monkeys. Read more here.
