Dog fun day to support Pup Aid
A dog fun day will be taking place at Primrose Hill, London, on September 7. The event will include appearances from celebrities such as Ricky Gervais and The Dreamboys and is being held in support of Pup Aid - in an effort to stop puppy farming. People are encouraged to come along to the dog fun day and sign the puppy farming e-petition by clicking here.

Birdworld holds Penguin Day
Researchers, conservationists and those working in penguin husbandry are gathering together at the International Penguin Conference from September 2-6. During the event, which is taking place at Bristol University, delegates will share ideas, results and best practice in protecting the 17 penguin species. Threats such as pollution, fishing practice and climate change are presenting a serious challenge to all penguins species.

Stranded dolphin rescued by RNLI
A dolphin that last week became stranded on sandbanks of the River Dee was rescued and released into deeper water by a team from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). The team transferred the dolphin to a lifeboat in a stretcher, where her condition was monitored, until she was safe to be released. Click here to watch video footage of the rescue.

Six signs of stress
Animal health company Vetoquinol has released a checklist to help owners identify signs of stress in their dog. The checklist covers behavioural changes such as barking or howling, as well as physical changes including weight loss and posture. Vet and behaviourist Hannah Lyon said: "Dealing with an upset pet can be distressing for owners but there are steps you can take to help your dog feel more secure in his environment." Four Paws reveals consumers want labelling of eggs in food
Animal Charity FOUR PAWS reveals that 69% of consumers want labelling of eggs in food. Although conventional battery cages are now outlawed across Europe, around half of egg-laying hens in the UK are still confined in battery cages where they are unable to even stretch their wings. FOUR PAWS urges shoppers to check labels carefully. Angelique Davies of FOUR PAWs advises "If it doesn't specify on the the ingredients list that the eggs are free range or barn, you can assume that they are likely to have come from battery eggs."

Flight of the Butterflies IMAX
SK Films have announced that the nature documentary Flight of the Butterflies will be exclusively released to the British Film Institute (BFI) IMAX on September 6, 2013. The documentary showcases the migration of the Monarch butterfly - one of the longest migrations across a continent - alongside the story of a scientist's 40 year search to find their secret migration place. Macro photography and 3D lens technology has together helped produce a film that is said to leave audiences spellbound.

Elanco Animal Health has announced it will be holding three webinars for large animal practitioners this autumn, following the successful ketosis series earlier this year. The upcoming webinars will focus on nutrition of the transition dairy cow and will be free to attend. Speaking for the CPD series are animal nutrition lecturer Finbar Mulligan and ruminant nutritionist Hefin Richards, who will each look at a multidisciplinary approach to dairy cow nutrition. Fifty-two per cent of British dog owners admit to not picking up their dogs' mess, new statistics have shown. It was also revealed that two-thirds of Brits who have witnessed an owner leaving dog mess chose not to confront them. Wildlife park welcomes newborn red panda
The Highland Wildlife Park has welcomed the arrival of newborn red panda, Kush. Born at the beginning of June to first-time parents Kitty and Kevyn, Kush is the park's first ever red panda cub. His parents, who are both two-years-old, only joined the park last year so keepers were particularly pleased with the recent arrival of Kush. Due to the sensitivity of red pandas, Kush and his parents will still be off show for the next few weeks.

DNA testing for Finnish lapphunds
The Kennel Club has approved an official DNA testing scheme for glycogen storage disease type II (GSDII) - also known as Pompe's disease - in Finnish lapphunds. UK owners can contact Laboklin, who is offering the test, for more information. Test results will also be be sent directly to the Kennel Club, where they will be added to the dog's registration details and published in the next Breed Records Supplement.

RCVS welcomes 740 new graduates
This Summer, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) has welcomed 740 new UK graduates to its Register. The new registrations were made as part of graduation ceremonies at the seven veterinary schools in the UK. Newly inaugurated RCVS president, Neil Smith, said: "It's a great privilege to welcome these new graduates to the college." Each new veterinary surgeon received a memory stick which included a number of college publications. Any graduates who did not receive their memory stick should contact: the RCVS via Email
