Laura Muir wins gold at Commonwealth Games
9th August 2022
Veterinary surgeon and Olympic silver-medalist Laura Muir scooped the gold medal in the 1500m final Commonwealth Games on Sunday.

Winning Scotland's 12th title of the games, Muir finished in four minutes 2.75 seconds, collecting her second medal in 24 hours.

Dr Muir commented on her win: "I just thought my strength is in my kick and I just tried to trust it and hope nobody would catch me. I ran as hard as I could to the line.

"It is so nice to come here and not just get one medal but two and in such a competitive field. Those girls are fast. It means a lot."
 BVNA reveals results of council elections

The successful candidates of the 2022 BVNA Council elections have been revealed.

This year there were 12 candidates standing for the five available places. A total of 266 votes were cast out of 5617 eligible voters.The elected candidates are: Christopher Appleton, Emma Foreman, Sarah Holliday, Nikki McLeod and Steph Worsley.

Bronwyn Bailey was the only person to apply for the student member vacancy, and has therefore been appointed without a vote.

The candidates will be presented to the AGM of the BVNA for ratification on Sunday, 9 October.
Avian flu outbreak at RSPB Minsmere

RSPB Minsmere nature reserve in Suffolk has confirmed an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza on its site. The coastal nature reserve has seen an increase in dead birds recently, and has said that it is 'extremely concerned' about the potential impacts on bird populations, with 2021 and 2022 seeing the largest ever outbreak in the UK.

In a statement, RSPB said: "We appreciate that it is distressing, for both visitors and staff, to see dead or dying birds at our site but we ask that if visitors see any dead or unwell birds, they do not touch or go near them and that they report it to us at our Visitor Centre during its opening hours, or by emailing us on minsmere@rspb.org.uk outside of these times."
World Bee Day celebrations begin

Today (20 May) marks the fifth annual World Bee Day, which raises awareness of the importance of bees and pollinators to people and the planet. Observed on the anniversary of pioneering Slovenian beekeeper Anton Jana's birthday, this year's celebration is themed: 'Bee Engaged: Celebrating the diversity of bees and beekeeping systems'.

Organisations and people celebrating the day will raise awareness of the accelerated decline in pollinator diversity, and highlight the importance of sustainable beekeeping systems and a wide variety of bees. Slovenia, the initiator of World Bee Day, will be focusing on teaching young people about the significance of pollinators.
BSAVA offers free membership to Ukrainians

Following advice from its Ukrainian counterpart, the USAVA, the BSAVA is offering free overseas membership to support Ukrainian veterinary professionals.

Ukrainian veterinary professionals will have complimentary access to Congress on Demand content, and BSAVA Collections, as well as all other perks included in BSAVA membership. It is hoped that the information will help veterinary surgeons working in challenging conditions in Ukraine, support those working outside of their country for the first time, and help to keep those who are unable to work involved in the profession.

BSAVA president Sheldon Middleton said: "As an education charity we are limited in how we can utilise our funds in this situation but the USAVA told us that access to education resources would be valuable not only to vets still in Ukraine but also to so many of those who are now refugees."
Online veterinary conference to raise funds for Ukraine

The Federation of European Companion Animal Veterinary Associations (FECAVA) is teaming up with The Webinar Vet to raise funds for the emergency effort in Ukraine.

The collaboration will take the form of a virtual CPD/CE session on Saturday, 9 April, from 10 am to 1 pm (9 am-9 pm BST), and will include more than 10 hours of lectures on an array of veterinary topics delivered by experts across the globe.

Funds raised by the event will go towards the Appeal of the Disaster Emergency Committee and Four Paws. To participate, register for free on The Webinar Vet website and select where you would like to donate.
SVN seeks help with canine behaviour dissertation

A veterinary nursing student has launched a survey for her dissertation looking into the behavioural effects of long-term medical isolation in canines.

Final year Harper Adams student Amy Carter would like to hear from RVNs that have nursed a canine patient over 12 months old, admitted for a condition that warranted medical isolation for more than seven days.

The survey, a study into the behavioural effects of reduced stimulation in long-term isolated canines, is available on the Harper Adams website
Vet nurse student seeks public views on dog toxins

A new survey has been launched to gain a deeper understanding of the public's knowledge of canine toxins.

Simran Tanda, a veterinary nurse student at the University of Bristol, is conducting the research as part of her dissertation. The survey takes a couple of minutes to complete and aims to improve current resources on toxins and ultimately reduce the number of accidental poisoning cases.

Battersea's Muddy Dog Challenge opens for registration
16th March 2022
Registration has opened for animal welfare charity Battersea's annual 'Muddy Dog Challenge'. The fundraising challenge, which can be undertaken as a 2.5km or 5km obstacle course, will see participants run through a variety of exciting obstacles. These include the bubble tunnel the doggy day spa and the ball pit bath.

The course can be ran or walked, and anyone interested is encouraged to take the challenge with or without a dog. Battersea is seeking both participants and volunteers for the events, and all money raised will go towards the charity's rescue and rehoming mission. Vet nurses invited to free dermatology event

Veterinary nurses are being invited to join a free event in Manchester looking at 'innovative solutions for itchy pets'.

Hosted by the Veterinary Nurse Dermatology Group, participants will learn more about the field of dermatology and gain valuable new skills. Lidiia Alaverdova DVM, founder of Vet Reflections will lead the session, and veterinary nurses will learn how to apply design thinking within a dermatology clinic.

WSAVA Awards 2022 open for nominations

Nominations for the prestigious 2022 World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) Awards have been announced, with free registration and travel to the WSAVA World Congress in Peru for the recipients.

Nominations are invited in the following categories: The WSAVA Award for Companion Animal Welfare, The WSAVA Future Leader Award, The WSAVA Award for Global Meritorious Service, and the WSAVA Award for Scientific Achievement.

BVNA Congress 2022 tickets go on sale

Tickets are now on sale for the 2022 BVNA Congress, which takes place at the Telford International Centre, 7-9 October.
