New veterinary school to open in 2014
University of Surrey announces plans for school of medicine

The University of Surrey is to launch a new School of Veterinary Medicine in 2014, and has announced plans to embrace links between human and animal health.

The school, which is only the eighth school of veterinary medicine in the country and the first of its kind in south-east England, will take the 'One health - One Medicine' philosophy.

It will include a unique research-led veterinary medicine degree programme with an emphasis on research, veterinary pathology and livestock medicine.

Based at the heart of the University of Surrey's Manor Park site in Guildford, the new school will be delivered through collaborations with key partners including the Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency (AHVLA), the BBSRC Pirbright Institute and the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD).

The university is already in consultation with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS).

Dean of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Surrey, Professor Lisa Roberts, said: “As a research-intensive University we have the expertise, reputation, technical and business skills which our students can benefit from, allowing us to train the veterinary leaders of the future.

"Combining state-of-the-art facilities, our unique partnerships and a campus location, the new School will provide a stimulating environment not only for undergraduates, but for the professional development training of qualified veterinary surgeons.”

The guidance can be found here. More detail is expected as negotiations progress.

The House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee will launch its inquiry into Pet Parasite Medication (PPM) on Wednesday (3 June).

Focusing on treatments containing fipronil and imidacloprid, the inquiry will seek to understand distribution pathways and the impacts of PPM use and non-use on biodiversity and human health. It will also cover current regulation, monitoring, and the potential implications for pets and their owners.

The committee will hear evidence from environmental non-governmental organisations and research institutes. The public can follow the proceedings live on Parliament TV or in person in the Palace of Westminster.
