Fourth edition BSAVA Dermatology Manual released
The manual costs £90, but is available for only £60 to BSAVA members.
The manual has been edited by Hilary Jackson and Rosanna Marsella.

The BSAVA has released the fourth edition of the BSAVA Manual of Canine and Feline Dermatology.

Revised under the direction of Hilary Jackson and Rosanna Marsella, the manual has been edited to include several new chapters, alongside expanded sections.

Retaining the popular format of the third edition, the manual is an easy-to-read resource focused on the clinically relevant aspects of dermatological diseases.

Beginning with an initial chapters which review the basic structure and function of the skin, as well as discussing a logical approach to history-taking and outlining the core investigative tests that can be taken, the manual then features chapters which take a problem-oriented approach to common dermatological conditions.

These include papules and pustules, scaling, and erosions and ulcerations. Within this section, the chapters on pyoderma, ear disease and atopic dermatitis have been expanded significantly, along with two new chapters dedicated solely to feline dermatological conditions.

Also new to this edition is a chapter covering the indications for allergy testing and the use of allergen-specific immunotherapy, along with a separate chapter on skin cytology.

In the final section of the manual, readers will discover a focus on the major skin diseases encountered in dogs and cats, including a chapter on topical treatments.

Available in both print and digital formats, the manual is £90 (£60 to BSAVA members) and can be purchased via the BSAVA online shop, or digitally via the BSAVA Library.

Practices urged to audit neutering data

News Story 1
RCVS Knowledge has called on vet practices to audit their post-operative neutering outcomes.

It follows the release of the 2024 NASAN benchmarking report, which collates data from neutering procedures performed on dogs, cats and rabbits.

The benchmarking report enables practices in the UK and Ireland to compare their post-operative outcomes to the national average. This includes the rate of patients lost to follow-up, which in 2024 increased to 23 per cent.

Anyone from the practice can submit the data using a free template. The deadline for next report is February 2026.

Visit the RCVS Knowledge website to complete an audit.

New guidance for antibiotic use in rabbits

New best practice guidance on the responsible use of antibiotics in rabbits has been published by the BSAVA in collaboration with the Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund (RWA&F).

The guidance is free and has been produced to help veterinary practitioners select the most appropriate antibiotic for rabbits. It covers active substance, dose and route of administration all of which are crucial factors when treating rabbits owing to the risk of enterotoxaemia.

For more information and to access the guide, visit the BSAVALibrary.
