BSAVA hails success of Clinical Abstracts Programme
"BSAVA is delighted that so many young clinical researchers were able to present their findings to such a large, international audience" - Ian Ramsey, incoming BSAVA president.

Digital sessions attract participants from across the globe.

The BSAVA is celebrating the success of its 2020 Clinical Abstracts Programme, which achieved the largest audience for clinical abstracts in the Congress' history.

Chaired by BSAVA's incoming president Professor Ian Ramsey, the digital sessions involved 47 presenters from across the globe presenting topics including surgery, neurology, internal medicine and oncology.

Some 160 veterinary professionals attended each of the four sessions, generating interaction and participation from people both in the UK and worldwide.

Professor Ian Ramsey commented: “BSAVA Congress: The Abstract Sessions were an innovation in the interactive presentation of Clinical Research Abstracts that firmly combined BSAVA’s clinical science and education at the forefront of our response to the pandemic," said Ian Ramsey, incoming BSAVA president.

“BSAVA is delighted that so many young clinical researchers were able to present their findings to such a large and international audience. This was probably the largest audience for clinical research abstracts that any veterinary conference has ever achieved and feedback has been very positive.

“We will use this experience in future BSAVA congresses to enhance our offering in clinical research to audiences around the world.”

If you missed the sessions, don't worry! The abstract videos can be watched via Congress on Demand, an online resource containing all of the lectures that would have taken place at this year's BSAVA Congress.

The full abstracts programme can be found here.

Practices urged to audit neutering data

News Story 1
RCVS Knowledge has called on vet practices to audit their post-operative neutering outcomes.

It follows the release of the 2024 NASAN benchmarking report, which collates data from neutering procedures performed on dogs, cats and rabbits.

The benchmarking report enables practices in the UK and Ireland to compare their post-operative outcomes to the national average. This includes the rate of patients lost to follow-up, which in 2024 increased to 23 per cent.

Anyone from the practice can submit the data using a free template. The deadline for next report is February 2026.

Visit the RCVS Knowledge website to complete an audit.

New guidance for antibiotic use in rabbits

New best practice guidance on the responsible use of antibiotics in rabbits has been published by the BSAVA in collaboration with the Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund (RWA&F).

The guidance is free and has been produced to help veterinary practitioners select the most appropriate antibiotic for rabbits. It covers active substance, dose and route of administration all of which are crucial factors when treating rabbits owing to the risk of enterotoxaemia.

For more information and to access the guide, visit the BSAVALibrary.
