BVA responds to member requests

Client leaflets raise awareness of veterinary work

Responding to requests from members of the profession, the BVA has produced free client leaflets aimed at raising awareness of the cost of veterinary care, the benefits of pet insurance and how to choose a practice.

The leaflets come as a result of the largest ever BVA member research project - "Your BVA, Your Say". Vets asked the association to help with the challenge of educating the general public about the realities of veterinary practice, thereby improving perceptions of the profession.

"Vets across all member grades very clearly told us about their concerns over the perceptions that some sectors of the general public have of the profession," said Peter Jones, BVA president.

"Our members in practice are feeling the pressure of negative public perceptions often caused by a lack of understanding about the hours vets work and the reasons behind veterinary fees."

Mr Jones added that there was a "strong call" for the BVA to help members address these issues by raising awareness and educating the general public.

In response to these requests, he said: "There is no quick-fix solution but the BVA has taken this message to heart and I am pleased to announce these leaflets as an important step forward, and urge vets to make them available to clients in their waiting room or reception areas.

"The leaflets can be a good opener for all staff in the practice to engage clients about the services that are on offer, and an opportunity to build confidence in the relationship based on a better understanding of what vets do and how their fees are structured."

The leaflets can now be downloaded free of charge from the BVA's website.

Birmingham Dogs Home has issued an urgent winter appeal as it faces more challenges over the Christmas period.

The rescue centre has seen a dramatic increase in dogs coming into its care, and is currently caring for over 200 dogs. With rising costs and dropping temperatures, the charity is calling for urgent support.

It costs the charity £6,000 per day to continue its work.

Fi Harrison, head of fundraising and communications, said: "It's heart-breaking for our team to see the conditions some dogs arrive in. We really are their last chance and hope of survival."

Avian flu confirmed at premises in Cornwall

A case of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 has been detected in commercial poultry at a premises near Rosudgeon, Cornwall.

All poultry on the infected site will be humanely culled, and a 3km protection zone and 10km surveillance zone have been put in place. Poultry and other captive birds in the 3km protection zone must be housed.

The case is the second avian flu case confirmed in commercial poultry this month. The H5N5 strain was detected in a premises near Hornsea, East Riding of Yorkshire, in early November. Before then, the disease had not been confirmed in captive birds in England since February.

The UK chief veterinary officer has urged bird keepers to remain alert and practise robust biosecurity.

A map of the disease control zones can be found here.
