Microchipping message sinking in
It has been announced that over 90,000 pets' records were checked by their owners during National Microchipping Month, which took place during June.
The annual campaign is run by Petlog to help raise awareness of the importance of microchipping and updating database records.
Petlog Executive, Celia Walsom, said: “We are delighted that over 90,000 contact details were checked. This is great news, as it shows that we are getting through to people that having their pet microchipped alone is not enough – they also need to keep their contact details up to date.
“This figure demonstrates that people are not just listening but actively taking action. Although it is good news that so many people have now ensured their pet has a form of permanent identification and the correct details on the database, we’re concerned that too many people are forgetting to update the moment they change their details.
“Unfortunately, we know too well that people have to be reminded to update their details, which is why we run initiatives such as National Microchipping Month. However this only comes around once a year, and that could be too late for some pets.”
Two independent vets have launched a podcast to help owners strengthen their bond with pets. Dr Maggie Roberts and Dr Vanessa Howie, who have worked in both veterinary practice and major charities, are keen to use their experience to enable people to give pets a better life.
