BVNA calling for poster abstracts
Interactive poster sessions to take place at Congress

The British Veterinary Nursing Association is inviting the submission of poster abstracts for the interactive posters sessions due to take place on Saturday 6th October as part of BVNA Congress.

Vet nurses can submit abstracts in two categories:

  • Clinical Development in Veterinary Nursing:
For those with an interest in small animals or equine-related veterinary practice. Emphasis should be given to evaluation and improvement of clinical practice and clinical decision making. The aims should be to celebrate innovative practice, investigate good nursing practice and introduce future developments.

  • Educational Innovations, Excellence and Research:
For those with an interest in teaching strategies, assessment and innovation in the modern veterinary nursing curriculum are invited to submit on an educational topic. Posters related to innovations, excellence and research in veterinary nursing education and interprofessional education (IPE) will be given priority.

The posters will be on display throughout the congress, with the aim of providing the opportunity to share experiences, discuss work in progress and highlight good practice and innovation in veterinary nursing clinical practice and education.

For the chance to present a poster, email the BVNA Office for an application form by the 30 June 2012, for consideration by the BVNA Scientific Congress Committee.

UK's BSE risk status downgraded

The WOAH has downgraded the UK's international risk status for BSE to 'negligible'.

Defra says that the UK's improved risk status recognises the reputation for having the highest standards for biosecurity. It adds that it demonstrates decades of rigorous animal control.

Outbreaks of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, also known as mad cow disease, have previously resulted in bans on Britain's beef exports.

The UK's new status could lead to expanded trade and better confidence in British beef.

Christine Middlemiss, the UK's chief veterinary officer, said: "WOAH's recognition of the UK as negligible risk for BSE is a significant milestone and is a testament to the UK's strong biosecurity measures and the hard work and vigilance of farmers and livestock keepers across the country who have all played their part in managing the spread of this disease.
