Defra forms new bTB advisory group
TBEG to be replaced

Defra has announced the formation of a new Government-industry group that will offer advice on bovine TB policy.

John Cross, current chairman of the English Beef and Lamb Executive (EBLEX), will head the TB Eradication Advisory Subgroup for England (TBAEG) - which will replace the TB Eradication Group for England (TBEG) formed in 2008.

TBEAG will feature new members and encompass more representatives with scientific expertise and wildlife and conservation knowledge, as well as a wider range of those with farming experience, who will join TBEG's current farming and veterinary representation and sit alongside representatives from Defra and its agencies.

The new group will be a subgroup of the recently established Animal Health and Welfare Board for England, which advises Defra on policy.

On Monday and Tuesday (June 25 and 26) Defra's decision to sanction two pilot badger culls in England will be challenged in a Judicial Review, brought by the Badger Trust. A ruling against the Government or a subsequent appeal against the decision by either side could delay the Gloucestershire and Somerset pilot beyond the intended ‘early autumn’ start date.

Defra shares new Sanitary and Phytosanitary guidance

News Story 1
Defra has published guidance for the vet sector ahead of a proposed UK-EU Sanitary and Phytosanitary agreement.

The agreement, which will change the movement and trade of animals and related products, could see reductions in checks, paperwork and certification. As well as describing regulatory developments, the advice highlights the importance of animal ID, registration and traceability in disease control and other compliance arrangements.

The guidance can be found here. More detail is expected as negotiations progress.

New form for online veterinary medicines retailers

The Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) has produced a new online form for retailers wishing to sell veterinary medicines on the internet.

The form replace the previous Word version and is part of the VMD's ongoing commitment to digitise its processes. Anyone retailing prescription medicines online, including POM-V, POM-VPS and NFA-VPS categories, is lawfully required to register with the VMD before trading.

The change only applies to new applicants. Retailers already listed on the VMD's Register of Online Retailers or registered under the Accredited Internet Retailer Scheme (AIRS) do not need to do anything.
