New conservation effort for red squirrels
A new conservation project to help the red squirrel population in north-east Carmarthenshire has begun after the Mid Wales Red Squirrel Project were able to secure £12,000 in funding from Environment Wales.
The red squirrels in Carmarthenshire constitute one of the three surviving populations left in Wales and it is believed that the favourable conditions of the Tywi forest have been a factor in the continued survival of the Carmarthenshire squirrels. The new project will survey the Gwenffrwd and Cothi valleys to attempt to observe squirrel activity, involve local landowners to assist with conservation efforts, and control the grey squirrel population to prevent competition and the spread of disease.
Commenting, Biodiversity Officer for Carmarthenshire County Council Isabel Macho said "We are really lucky still to have red squirrels in Carmarthenshire and their protection is one of our priorities."
The Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) is inviting applications from veterinary students to attend a one-week extramural studies (EMS) placement in July 2026.
