PDSA launches new survey
Call for more vets and VNs to contribute

The People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) has called for vets and veterinary nurses to offer their thoughts on various matters of importance in the care of the nation's companion animal pets as a part of the charity's 2012 survey. Last year's survey polled over 11,000 members of the public and 140 vets and VNs, and a spokesperson for the PDSA expressed the hope that more than 500 vets and VNs might contribute this year.

The 2011 PDSA Animal Welfare (PAW) Report found that 89% of pet owners felt that people should be aware of the health and welfare needs of animals which are outlined in the Animal Welfare Act 2006. However, the same poll revealed that only 45% of those polled considered themselves appropriately familiar with these needs.

Commenting, PDSA Senior Vet Nicola Martin said “We're looking for a mix of opinions, what you do you in your practice and what information you think is valuable and asking for opinions on key topical issues such as microchipping, dangerous dogs and pet insurance.”

More information can be found at the PDSA website.

Defra has published guidance for the vet sector ahead of a proposed UK-EU Sanitary and Phytosanitary agreement.

The agreement, which will change the movement and trade of animals and related products, could see reductions in checks, paperwork and certification. As well as describing regulatory developments, the advice highlights the importance of animal ID, registration and traceability in disease control and other compliance arrangements.

The guidance can be found here. More detail is expected as negotiations progress.

New form for online veterinary medicines retailers

The Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) has produced a new online form for retailers wishing to sell veterinary medicines on the internet.

The form replace the previous Word version and is part of the VMD's ongoing commitment to digitise its processes. Anyone retailing prescription medicines online, including POM-V, POM-VPS and NFA-VPS categories, is lawfully required to register with the VMD before trading.

The change only applies to new applicants. Retailers already listed on the VMD's Register of Online Retailers or registered under the Accredited Internet Retailer Scheme (AIRS) do not need to do anything.
