BVNA/BSAVA NI Congress 2012 – Speakers announced
Emphasis on Endocrinology this year

Guest Speakers specialising in Endocrinology have been announced for this year's BVNA/BSAVA Northern Ireland Congress. The Northern Ireland Companion Animal Weekend will be held in the Roe Park Resort in Limavady, and an outstanding program is promised. Furthermore, musical entertainment will be provided by 'The Fat, the Bald and the Thirsty'.

A practical programme of valuable CPD is scheduled, and it is hoped that the programme will refresh attendees' knowledge of the basics of endocrinology and develop understanding of a range of complex conditions that will have immediate benefit in practice. In light of the frequency with which endocrinological cases occur in practice, this is an area in which further study will prove valuable.

NI conference regulars will notice the new format for our weekend, which is designed to allow the maximum number of lectures into just two days - giving better value in these cash-strapped times.

The guest speakers are:

Barbara Gallagher MVB
Barbara qualified from University College Dublin in 2005 and spent three years working in a busy small animal practice in the UK. Since 2008 she has been an ECVIM-CA Resident in Internal Medicine in UCD. She is due to sit her board examinations in September. She has a particular interest in endocrinology especially in cats.

Doctor Carmel T Mooney MVB MPhil PhD DECVIM-CA MRCVS
Carmel qualified from University College Dublin in 1986 and spent several years working in Scotland in both Edinburgh and Glasgow Universities. She is currently a Senior Lecturer in UCD where she specialises in endocrine disease of dogs and cats.

Further programme information and details on registration will be available shortly.

BBC Radio 4 documentary addresses corporate fees

BBC Radio 4's File on 4 Investigates has released a documentary exploring how corporate-owned veterinary practices may be inflating bills to increase profit.

Released on 15 April, 'What's Happening To Your Vet Bills?' revealed the policies which many corporate groups have in place to increase their profits. This included targets and upgrades which veterinary teams are tasked with meeting on a regular basis.

It also features Anrich Vets, an independently-owned practice based in Wigan. Following the case of Staffordshire terrier Benjy, who is diagnosed with a tumour, the documentary shares how the team were able to offer contextualised care and advice to make the procedure as affordable as possible for his owners.

The documentary can be heard on demand on BBC iPlayer.
