RCVS to hold 'Question Time'
Meeting in Leeds to discuss issues

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) will be holding an 'RCVS Question Time' event at the Mercure Leeds Parkway Hotel on Thursday 8th March 2012. Veterinary Surgeons, Veterinary Nurses, Practice Managers and everyone with an interest in the issues of the profession are invited to either attend or send in questions to which they would like an answer.

The event will begin at 1pm with 45-minute 'surgeries' which are open to Practices accredited with or considering joining the Practice Standards Scheme (PSS). The evening will start with a buffet and drinks at 6.30pm, and the meeting itself will start at 7.15pm. No formal agenda will be set, as was the case with previous similar events in which topics of discussion included the new Draft Codes of Professional Conduct, the regulation of Veterinary Nurses and veterinary legislation. It is hoped that this structure (or lack thereof) will allow for greater flexibility and evolution in the ensuing debate.

The President of the RCVS Dr Jerry Davies will be attending, as will RCVS and VN Council members, and they will be able to explore pressing matters with those present. Those unable to attend in person are invited to send their questions in beforehand so that they can still be tackled at the meeting.

For further information or to book a place, please contact Fiona Harcourt (f.harcourt@rcvs.org.uk or 020 7202 0773). Questions those unable to attend in person would like asked should be emailed to the above address.

Birmingham Dogs Home makes urgent appeal

News Story 1
Birmingham Dogs Home has issued an urgent winter appeal as it faces more challenges over the Christmas period.

The rescue centre has seen a dramatic increase in dogs coming into its care, and is currently caring for over 200 dogs. With rising costs and dropping temperatures, the charity is calling for urgent support.

It costs the charity £6,000 per day to continue its work.

Fi Harrison, head of fundraising and communications, said: "It's heart-breaking for our team to see the conditions some dogs arrive in. We really are their last chance and hope of survival."

Avian flu confirmed at premises in Cornwall

A case of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 has been detected in commercial poultry at a premises near Rosudgeon, Cornwall.

All poultry on the infected site will be humanely culled, and a 3km protection zone and 10km surveillance zone have been put in place. Poultry and other captive birds in the 3km protection zone must be housed.

The case is the second avian flu case confirmed in commercial poultry this month. The H5N5 strain was detected in a premises near Hornsea, East Riding of Yorkshire, in early November. Before then, the disease had not been confirmed in captive birds in England since February.

The UK chief veterinary officer has urged bird keepers to remain alert and practise robust biosecurity.

A map of the disease control zones can be found here.
