BSAVA launches new VN Award
Veterinary Nurse Merit Awards announced

The British Small Animals Veterinary Association (BSAVA) has announced the launch of the BSAVA Veterinary Nurse Merit Awards. It is the BSAVA's intention that the awards “will be for the motivated nurse in primary care practice who would like to expand their knowledge in a specific field.”

The awards are aimed at those who, while not in the position to commit to diploma-level training, still wish to undertake further study and CPD. The program will consist of a two day course with a practical component, a follow-up one day course a couple of months later, two webinars and an online assessment.

Those who complete the program and assessment in a manner that is deemed satisfactory will receive a certificate and a badge. The programmes do not constitute a formally accredited qualification, but the awards do provide a recognition of interest and expertise in a particular field. The BSAVA hope that nurses would renew their award by short refresher course at five year intervals.

Further information about offered courses and relevant dates will be available online soon. If you would like to find out more about the BSAVA Veterinary Nurse Merit Awards please email courses@bsava.com

Defra shares new Sanitary and Phytosanitary guidance

News Story 1
Defra has published guidance for the vet sector ahead of a proposed UK-EU Sanitary and Phytosanitary agreement.

The agreement, which will change the movement and trade of animals and related products, could see reductions in checks, paperwork and certification. As well as describing regulatory developments, the advice highlights the importance of animal ID, registration and traceability in disease control and other compliance arrangements.

The guidance can be found here. More detail is expected as negotiations progress.

Lords Committee opens Pet Parasite Medication inquiry

The House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee will launch its inquiry into Pet Parasite Medication (PPM) on Wednesday (3 June).

Focusing on treatments containing fipronil and imidacloprid, the inquiry will seek to understand distribution pathways and the impacts of PPM use and non-use on biodiversity and human health. It will also cover current regulation, monitoring, and the potential implications for pets and their owners.

The committee will hear evidence from environmental non-governmental organisations and research institutes. The public can follow the proceedings live on Parliament TV or in person in the Palace of Westminster.
