Moredun Research Institute offers scholarships
Three scholarships available in 2012

The Moredun Foundation is encouraging vets and veterinary students seeking funding for a short term project to apply for a Moredun Scholarship Award before the 2012 application cycle closes at the end of February. Whether for travelling in the UK or abroad during the Summer months to attend a particular conference, competition or event, learning a new skill or conducting a short research project, three scholarships of up to £1000 are available from Moredun in 2012.

The scholarship scheme offers an opportunity for individuals to pursue a short term project to broaden their education and experience in areas relating to livestock health and welfare and the agricultural industry. Projects may involve work experience, travel, collaborations with science or the arts and are open to individuals over the age of 18 living in the UK with the condition that the applicant is a member of the Moredun Foundation at the time of applying.

The Moredun Foundation is a registered charity and governs the work of the internationally recognized Moredun Research Institute near Edinburgh. It is hoped that these scholarships will support and encourage innovative and diverse projects and contribute to Moredun’s mission to improve the health and welfare of livestock.

Commenting, Moredun Communications Manager Maggie Bennett said “These scholarships are a fantastic way for individuals to pursue a short term project or further develop their own knowledge of livestock health. Recipients of this award will have the flexibility to use their scholarships to support travel, work experience or continued research or a combination of all three. We have already received some applications but there is still time for anyone wishing to apply for a scholarship to submit an application before the end of February deadline.”

The closing date for applications for a 2012 Moredun Foundation Scholarship is Wednesday 29 February 2012. Successful applicants will be notification in writing by Friday 30 March 2012 and projects need to be completed by Friday 31 August 2012.

Further information and an application form are available to download from the Moredun website www.moredun.org.uk/scholarship. Application forms and guidelines can also be emailed to prospective applicants on request – email scholarship@moredun.org.uk for further information.

Birmingham Dogs Home has issued an urgent winter appeal as it faces more challenges over the Christmas period.

The rescue centre has seen a dramatic increase in dogs coming into its care, and is currently caring for over 200 dogs. With rising costs and dropping temperatures, the charity is calling for urgent support.

It costs the charity £6,000 per day to continue its work.

Fi Harrison, head of fundraising and communications, said: "It's heart-breaking for our team to see the conditions some dogs arrive in. We really are their last chance and hope of survival."

Avian flu confirmed at premises in Cornwall

A case of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 has been detected in commercial poultry at a premises near Rosudgeon, Cornwall.

All poultry on the infected site will be humanely culled, and a 3km protection zone and 10km surveillance zone have been put in place. Poultry and other captive birds in the 3km protection zone must be housed.

The case is the second avian flu case confirmed in commercial poultry this month. The H5N5 strain was detected in a premises near Hornsea, East Riding of Yorkshire, in early November. Before then, the disease had not been confirmed in captive birds in England since February.

The UK chief veterinary officer has urged bird keepers to remain alert and practise robust biosecurity.

A map of the disease control zones can be found here.
