Charity appeals for old textbooks
The Worldwide Veterinary Service (WVS) and the British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA) have joined forces to launch an appeal for old veterinary textbooks and manuals. Anyone attending the forthcoming BSAVA Congress from 11-15 April 2012 is invited to bring any old textbooks, manuals or other reference texts and donate them so that others can benefit from their use.
The WVS has been providing animal welfare organisations all over the world with aid and assistance since 2003. The charity now helps over 450 registered charities around the world with volunteer teams, veterinary supplies and support in disaster emergency response.
One noteworthy example of the charity's work is the launch of an International Training Centre (ITC) in the south of India in September 2010 to train local veterinary surgeons and charity workers with particular emphasis on animal birth control best practice techniques and the control of rabies. The ITC also offers specialist courses with the help of the Pet Plan Charitable Trust which cover a broad range of topics that includes everything from small animal anaesthesia to large animal surgery. The courses are attended by vets and nurses who are enthusiastic to expand their skills and learn more about their profession.
A collection point at the WVS stand in the ICC will be available during the four days of the Congress where donations can be handed in. Thanks to the great support of Dogs Trust, who will be helping to transport the books back down to the WVS office in Dorset, they will soon be sent off to where they are needed the most.
All veterinary books will be welcome, so if you have past BSAVA manuals, old veterinary formulary books or even text books in a foreign language, WVS will find a charity that can make good use of them.
Two independent vets have launched a podcast to help owners strengthen their bond with pets. Dr Maggie Roberts and Dr Vanessa Howie, who have worked in both veterinary practice and major charities, are keen to use their experience to enable people to give pets a better life.
