Consultation Underway for Veterinary Nursing Assistants
Deadline approaching for consultation on new Veterinary Nursing Assistant apprenticeship.

Veterinary practices across the UK have until 30th September 2011 to participate in a Lantra-organised consultation on proposals for a new Level 2 Intermediate/Foundation Apprenticeship for support and auxiliary staff in veterinary practice.

Practices can take part in the online survey to have their say in deciding whether there is sufficient evidence showing the need for the development of the Apprenticeship framework.

Veterinary Professionals can also participate and provide feedback at the Lantra stand during this year's BVA Congress on 23-24 September. If it is decided there is a need for further development of the Apprenticeship Framework, the draft can be reviewed online during October and at the BVNA Congress on 7-9 October.

Lantra's work with the animal health and welfare industries is lead by RVN Lisa Jarvis. She will be working alongside Jo-Anne Bryant, Lantra's Apprenticeship Manager, to support this consultation and liaise with the industry to make sure the framework is designed to best support the needs of veterinary practices.

Of the consultation, Jarvis said: "We need practices to get involved ad provide guidance and feedback to guarantee that all staff working in a practice have the opportunity to undergo appropriate training, including the fundamental skills needed by employers."

She added: "We need your support and expertise to shape the Level 2 Intermediate/Foundation Apprenticeship for Nursing Assistants in a Veterinary Setting."

UK's BSE risk status downgraded

The WOAH has downgraded the UK's international risk status for BSE to 'negligible'.

Defra says that the UK's improved risk status recognises the reputation for having the highest standards for biosecurity. It adds that it demonstrates decades of rigorous animal control.

Outbreaks of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, also known as mad cow disease, have previously resulted in bans on Britain's beef exports.

The UK's new status could lead to expanded trade and better confidence in British beef.

Christine Middlemiss, the UK's chief veterinary officer, said: "WOAH's recognition of the UK as negligible risk for BSE is a significant milestone and is a testament to the UK's strong biosecurity measures and the hard work and vigilance of farmers and livestock keepers across the country who have all played their part in managing the spread of this disease.
