Westminster Dog of the Year

Charlie, a five year old Border Terrier belonging to Helen Grant MP (Conservative, Maidstone and the Weald), is this year’s winner of the prestigious Westminster Dog of the Year title.

Viewed by many as a far cleaner fight than all other political campaigns, the Westminster Dog of the Year competition is organised by Dogs Trust and the Kennel Club, and seeks to crown a canine worthy of all-party respect.  The competition is open to all pooches belonging to parliamentarians of both houses, and this year’s prize was presented by TV presenter Jilly Goolden.

With poop scoop bag and sensible collar and lead in hand, winning MP and responsible dog owner Helen said of her beloved Charlie: “I’m so proud of Charlie, he’s shown the world what a fine dog he is; he truly is a canine first among equals.  He’ll celebrate his victory with a juicy bone this evening.  I’m sure his constituents in Maidstone will be thrilled that their local dog won the day.  We both think it’s so important to be a responsible dog owner.”

Bluetongue reaches Wales for first time in 2025

The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) has revealed that bluetongue has been confirmed in Wales for the first time in 2025.

In their latest statistics, APHA records a total of 109 cases of BTV-3 or BTV-8 in Great Britain in the 2025-2026 vector season.

The total number of BTV-3 cases in Great Britain this season is 107. This includes 103 cases within the England restricted zone and four cases in Wales.

There has also been two cases of BTV-8, which were both in Cornwall.

As a result of the cases in Wales, a Temporary Control Zone (TCZ) is enforced in Monmouthshire. Animals can move freely under general license within the England Restricted Zone, however animals with suspected bluetongue must stay on their holding.

All premises testing positive for blue tongue can be viewed on this map.
