National VN Week 2010 Winners

The British Veterinary Nursing Association has announced the ‘National VN Week 2010’ winners.

The winners are:

Best Waiting Room Display – PDSA, Northam, Southampton
Tracey Russell’s practice organised a huge waiting room display which promoted the role of the qualified nurse in great detail. They also used the Panorama programme to reassure clients and discussed the level of nursing care that was provided for patients in their practice.

Best Open Day Event – Avenue Veterinary Centre, Staple Hill, Bristol
The Avenue Veterinary Centre held a very successful open day which was extremely well attended.  They provided demonstrations and displays in all areas of the practice.  Feedback was very positive and those attending said they had really enjoyed themselves and learned a lot about the workings of a busy vet practice.

Best Community Event – Abbey Veterinary Centre, Durham & Chester-Le-Street
The practice team enthusiastically promoted VN Week with a number of events being carried out throughout the whole week.  They held a ‘Pet Health Checks’ event, ran a charity event at the Metro Centre in Gateshead and participated in the Chester-Le-Street outdoor market and also organised press releases in the local papers.

News Story 1
Defra has published guidance for the vet sector ahead of a proposed UK-EU Sanitary and Phytosanitary agreement.

The agreement, which will change the movement and trade of animals and related products, could see reductions in checks, paperwork and certification. As well as describing regulatory developments, the advice highlights the importance of animal ID, registration and traceability in disease control and other compliance arrangements.

The guidance can be found here. More detail is expected as negotiations progress.

Lords Committee opens Pet Parasite Medication inquiry

The House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee will launch its inquiry into Pet Parasite Medication (PPM) on Wednesday (3 June).

Focusing on treatments containing fipronil and imidacloprid, the inquiry will seek to understand distribution pathways and the impacts of PPM use and non-use on biodiversity and human health. It will also cover current regulation, monitoring, and the potential implications for pets and their owners.

The committee will hear evidence from environmental non-governmental organisations and research institutes. The public can follow the proceedings live on Parliament TV or in person in the Palace of Westminster.
