Research Training Scholarship Offered
The Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW) has given advance notice that it intends to offer both a Research Training Scholarship and a UFAW 3Rs Liaison Group Studentship later this year.

Potential applicants will have time to consider ideas for possible projects over the summer before the awards are open for application in autumn 2010.

The Research Training Scholarship scheme, introduced by UFAW in 1998, is designed to encourage high quality science likely to lead to substantial advances in animal welfare. This award (likely to be up to a maximum of £100,000) is to enable a veterinary or science graduate to undertake a three-year programme of research leading to a degree at the doctorate level.

The UFAW 3Rs Liaison Group funds research that is likely to lead to practical solutions for advancing the welfare of laboratory animals. The Studentship (likely to be up to a maximum of £75,000) is to enable a promising graduate to undertake a three-year programme of research leading to a degree at the doctorate level within the British Isles in any aspect of the Replacement, Reduction, or Refinement of laboratory animal use.

Further background information on the two awards can be seen on the grants and awards page of the UFAW website (www.ufaw.org.uk).

The agreement, which will change the movement and trade of animals and related products, could see reductions in checks, paperwork and certification. As well as describing regulatory developments, the advice highlights the importance of animal ID, registration and traceability in disease control and other compliance arrangements.

The guidance can be found here. More detail is expected as negotiations progress.

New form for online veterinary medicines retailers

The Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) has produced a new online form for retailers wishing to sell veterinary medicines on the internet.

The form replace the previous Word version and is part of the VMD's ongoing commitment to digitise its processes. Anyone retailing prescription medicines online, including POM-V, POM-VPS and NFA-VPS categories, is lawfully required to register with the VMD before trading.

The change only applies to new applicants. Retailers already listed on the VMD's Register of Online Retailers or registered under the Accredited Internet Retailer Scheme (AIRS) do not need to do anything.
