Interesting BSAVA Statistics
The BSAVA estimates that it supplied over 20,000 hot drinks last year.
Want to know some interesting statistics about the 2009 BSAVA congress? Read on below…

In 2009 a staggering 5,161 veterinary professionals attended the whole Congress and they were also joined by 2,359 day trippers. These figures include the 2,395 exhibitors involved in the commercial exhibition. This marked an increase in delegate attendance figures for the third year running, in fact 2009 figures showed an overall percentage increase of 7.7%.

BSAVA states that 58% of delegates attend the 2009 congress for the CPD opportunities and it is thought that that 70% of the people who attended were practicing veterinary surgeons

In terms of the exhibition in 2009, 49% of those looking around were doing so with the intent to buy something. 17% of visitors spent half a day or more in the exhibition and 11% spent a whole day or more. Also, 65% of people looked around the exhibition in their breaks and lunch times.

And now for some fun bits….At the Welcome reception last year almost 4,000 free glasses of champagne were given out. The BSAVA also estimates that it supplied over 20,000 hot drinks, 9,000 pieces of fruit, about 12,000 lunch bags and 7,000 ice creams during the whole of congress.

Practices urged to audit neutering data

News Story 1
RCVS Knowledge has called on vet practices to audit their post-operative neutering outcomes.

It follows the release of the 2024 NASAN benchmarking report, which collates data from neutering procedures performed on dogs, cats and rabbits.

The benchmarking report enables practices in the UK and Ireland to compare their post-operative outcomes to the national average. This includes the rate of patients lost to follow-up, which in 2024 increased to 23 per cent.

Anyone from the practice can submit the data using a free template. The deadline for next report is February 2026.

Visit the RCVS Knowledge website to complete an audit.

UK's BSE risk status downgraded

The WOAH has downgraded the UK's international risk status for BSE to 'negligible'.

Defra says that the UK's improved risk status recognises the reputation for having the highest standards for biosecurity. It adds that it demonstrates decades of rigorous animal control.

Outbreaks of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, also known as mad cow disease, have previously resulted in bans on Britain's beef exports.

The UK's new status could lead to expanded trade and better confidence in British beef.

Christine Middlemiss, the UK's chief veterinary officer, said: "WOAH's recognition of the UK as negligible risk for BSE is a significant milestone and is a testament to the UK's strong biosecurity measures and the hard work and vigilance of farmers and livestock keepers across the country who have all played their part in managing the spread of this disease.
