RCVS Academy Live to host interactive VN webinars
RCVS Academy will host four veterinary nursing sessions throughout May.
The webinars coincide with VN Awareness Month.

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Academy is to host a number of live, interactive webinars exploring the veterinary nursing theme.

The four online sessions will take place throughout May, as the British Veterinary Nursing Association (BVNA) marks Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month.

Sessions will be hosted by RCVS Academy, a free learning platform where attendees can take part in live discussions with experts and fellow veterinary professionals. Although they have a veterinary nursing focus, RCVS says veterinary surgeons and other members of the team are welcome to attend the sessions.

The first session is titled 'Working in the UK for overseas qualified veterinary professionals', and will be hosted by Vicky Hedges RVN  (RCVS Vet Nursing Examinations Quality Lead) and Claire Hobson RVN (RCVS Examinations Manager). It is aimed at those who wish to work in the UK, as well as those employing veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses from overseas.

'Working in the UK for overseas qualified veterinary professionals' will take place on Thursday, 8 May 2025 at 1pm.

The next session, hosted by Shirley Gibbins (RCVS Vet Nursing Qualifications Lead), is called 'Professional development as a RVN – finding your niche'. Ms Gibbins will offer a new perspective to RVNs, suggesting new ways of gaining professional development.

'Professional development as a RVN – finding your niche' will take place on Thursday, 15 May 2025 at 1pm.

The following week, RCVS Qualifications Assessors Sophie Geake, Jasmine Curtis and Tori Thornton will host 'Tackling tutorials'. This session is aimed at new, existing and prospective clinical supervisors, as well as others working in veterinary nursing training.

'Tackling tutorials' will take place on Tuesday, 20 May 2025 at 1pm.

Finally, VN Futures project manager Jill Macdonald will ask 'What do RVNs want to see in the future of the profession?'. The session will be open to all members of the veterinary profession and will explore the future development of veterinary nursing.

'What do RVNs want to see in the future of the profession?' will take place on Wednesday, 28 May 2025 at 1pm.

Catherine Hemingway, head of the RCVS Academy, said: “For this year’s VN Awareness Month we wanted to celebrate all veterinary nurses have to offer by sharing the expertise of our own VN staff with the wider professions, showcasing the breadth of what members of the profession can do, while also providing useful guidance and learning points to those taking part.

“The four free Academy Live sessions we’ve organised in May will be useful for all those who thrive in an interactive learning environment and cover a wide range of subjects with a particular emphasis around veterinary nurse registration, education, training, and professional development.”

Vets launch new podcast for pet owners

 Two independent vets have launched a podcast to help owners strengthen their bond with pets. Dr Maggie Roberts and Dr Vanessa Howie, who have worked in both veterinary practice and major charities, are keen to use their experience to enable people to give pets a better life.

The venture, called Vets Talking Pets, provides advice and information on a range of topics, including how to select a suitable pet, where to obtain them and how to get the best out of your vet. Maggie and Vanessa will also discuss sensitive subjects, including end-of-life care, raw food diets and the cost of veterinary care.

The podcast can be found on all the usual podcast sites, including Podbean, Apple, Amazon Music and YouTube.

RCVS Regional Question Time heads to Edinburgh

The RCVS is to bring its Regional Question Time (RQT) to Edinburgh for 2026.

The event will take place at Novotel Edinburgh Park in Edinburgh on Wednesday, 20 May 2026.

It will begin with supper and drinks at 6.30pm, with an evening programme from 7.30pm. This will start with an update on RCVS' activities, followed by questions and answers with representatives.

RCVS is encouraging an 'open dialogue', in which queries can be raised in a friendly, informal environment.

While discussions are expected to be audience-led, the RQT is expected address major issues including the VSA, the CMA's remedy package and the VN Vision project.

Tim Parkin, RCVS president, said: "It's an important time for the professions, and I'm looking forward to meeting colleagues in Scotland as we navigate this period of change together so we can come out stronger."
