Scientists at Michigan State University have discovered a rare form of human lung disease in an animal for the first time.
Research published in the journal Veterinary Pathology documents the existence of pulmonary veno-occlusive disease (PVOD) in dogs.
PVOD is a severe from of pulmonary hypertension caused by the abnormal blocking of blood vessels in the lungs. The blockage lead to high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs, which ultimately leads to heart failure.
