Concerns over KPIs in new TB testing contracts
cattle
BVA president Sean Wensley said the association is working to ensure the right balance is struck.

DARD releases general terms of procurement contract

The general terms of a new TB testing contract in Northern Ireland were released last week at two supplier open days arranged by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD).

Whilst the release of these terms has been "broadly welcomed" by BVA's Northern Ireland branch, incoming president Seamus O'Kane said: "Concerns were raised about the details of the KPIs."

The details of these concerns have not yet been shared, as the terms of the contract are not publicly available at this stage.

BVA president Sean Wensley said the association is working to ensure the right balance is struck.

"Our veterinary colleagues carrying out TB testing throughout the UK are engaged in work vital to animal health and welfare and to agricultural economies.

"We are working with administrations in every country to ensure the essential and expert work of veterinary surgeons is fully-recognised and that a balance is struck between proper remuneration for veterinary services, client choice, and certainty and ease in the administration of the service, including clarity in relation to KPIs."

The release of the full contract is expected on 1 March, 2016.

As well as describing regulatory developments, the advice highlights the importance of animal ID, registration and traceability in disease control and other compliance arrangements.

The guidance can be found here. More detail is expected as negotiations progress.

Lords Committee opens Pet Parasite Medication inquiry

The House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee will launch its inquiry into Pet Parasite Medication (PPM) on Wednesday (3 June).

Focusing on treatments containing fipronil and imidacloprid, the inquiry will seek to understand distribution pathways and the impacts of PPM use and non-use on biodiversity and human health. It will also cover current regulation, monitoring, and the potential implications for pets and their owners.

The committee will hear evidence from environmental non-governmental organisations and research institutes. The public can follow the proceedings live on Parliament TV or in person in the Palace of Westminster.
