The Veterinary Marketing Association (VMA) opens nominations for its Practice Marketing Award

Nominations are being sought for veterinary practices across the UK to be recognised for their marketing campaigns.

The Veterinary Marketing Association (VMA) Practice Marketing Award will be presented at an awards ceremony in March.

Claire Edmunds, who organises the event, said: "I would urge practices to review their marketing activity over the last year - they might be surprised at what they have achieved.

"This is not about quality or size, what the judges are looking for is initiative and innovation in marketing products or services to clients, whether pet owners or farmers."

Will Stirling, marketing manager for Midland's based YourVets, last year's winner, said: "It was a real boost to all the staff, and a great reward for all their hard work.

"Entering couldn't be easier, and for all the entrants the recognition it gives you within the industry is invaluable."

The awards recognise all aspects of marketing, from display advertising, direct and electronic mail, e-marketing, through to mobile and website/ digital communications.

There is a separate award for PR activity open to practices and businesses involved in the veterinary industry.

The winners will be named at a ceremony on March 14 at the Lancaster London Hotel.

The awards are organised by the VMA and supported by Merial Animal Health.

UK's BSE risk status downgraded

The WOAH has downgraded the UK's international risk status for BSE to 'negligible'.

Defra says that the UK's improved risk status recognises the reputation for having the highest standards for biosecurity. It adds that it demonstrates decades of rigorous animal control.

Outbreaks of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, also known as mad cow disease, have previously resulted in bans on Britain's beef exports.

The UK's new status could lead to expanded trade and better confidence in British beef.

Christine Middlemiss, the UK's chief veterinary officer, said: "WOAH's recognition of the UK as negligible risk for BSE is a significant milestone and is a testament to the UK's strong biosecurity measures and the hard work and vigilance of farmers and livestock keepers across the country who have all played their part in managing the spread of this disease.
