iCatCare launches cat behavioural course
iCatCare describes the course as a 'rich insight into the fascinating world of cat behaviour'.
International Cat Care (iCatCare) has launched a new online course, designed for veterinary professionals and others working with cats.
The iCatCare Cat Behavioural Health Programme will support learners with their understanding of feline behaviour, as well as advancing Cat Friendly care.
The charity describes the course as ‘a rich insight into the fascinating world of cat behaviour’. It says that learners will be able to recognise and meet the needs of individual cats of all ages.
Taught across four modules, developed by experts in feline behaviour, the course will explain how to assess the emotional state of cats. Learners will be encouraged to adapt their interactions and environments to promote positive behavioural health.
Through this, learners will be able to make informed decisions that benefit long-term wellbeing and Cat Friendly care
The syllabus explores biological and evolutionary factors, as well as the individual differences that might influence behaviour. There are also a number of interactive case studies that can be implemented into day-to-day experiences.
The course is open to anyone working with cats, including veterinary professionals and those working in homing centres and shelters.
It is inspired by iCatCare’s mission, in which it aims to instil Cat Friendly Care in every interaction cats have with humans. In the PDSA’s Paw Report for 2024, over 70 per cent of owners reported that their cat had behaviour problems.
Dr Sarah Ellis, programme director and iCatCare’s behaviour and wellbeing lead, said: “Across the world cats are misunderstood due to a lack of understanding of their behaviour, and as a result, their welfare suffers.
“Because a cat cannot tell us how it feels, application of this new knowledge and skills will help you tailor your approach to support the behavioural needs of every cat in your care, improving their mental wellbeing and long-term welfare.”
The online course, which is self-paced and on-demand, can be bought in full or by module. Those who complete the programme will be awarded iCatCare’s Cat Behavioural Health Practitioner title.
