Hike raises over £3,000 for BSAVA PetSavers
Seven fundraisers took part in the event.
The event was one of the initiatives marking BSAVA PetSavers’ 50th anniversary.

More than £3,000 has been raised following a sponsored hike for the British Small Animal Veterinary Association’s (BSAVA’s) grant fund BSAVA PetSavers.

Organised as part of BSAVA PetSavers’ 50th anniversary, the event saw staff and supporters hike nine miles across the Malvern Hills on Saturday, 11 May. The money raised on the hike will help support clinical research into companion animal diseases.

Since it was founded as the Clinical Studies Trust Fund in 1974, BSAVA PetSavers has been entirely funded by charitable donations. Over the past 50 years, it has invested around £2.7 million in research and training programmes.

The hike was part of a series of fundraising events to celebrate the 50th anniversary. A swap shop was held in April and supporters are encouraged to take part in a series of ‘kiltwalks’ planned for later in the year.

Sarah Williams, grant awarding and fundraising manager for BSAVA PetSavers, said: “We had a fabulous time on Saturday with a great team of people. We are grateful to everyone for taking the time to raise awareness of what BSAVA PetSavers does and are thrilled with the amount of money that has been raised.

“A huge thank you to everyone who took part!”

Free bloat webinar planned for dog owners

 The Kennel Club is inviting dog owners to attend a free webinar on gastric dilation-volvulus syndrome, also known as bloat.

Part of its health webinar series, the session will take place from 7pm to 8pm on 12 November. It will explore what scientific research has revealed about causes, symptoms, breed susceptibilities, diagnostic approaches, and treatment options, as well as looking at what future research could uncover.

The talk will be hosted by Mark Dunning, professor of small animal internal medicine at the University of Nottingham, and will include a 30-minute Q&A session.

FIVP to represent independent practices at London Vet Show

The Federation of Independent Veterinary Practices (FIVP) will be at stand (S05) at this year's London Vet Show.

The not-for-profit organisation will be explaining how its expertise and resources can help independent practices to thrive in a competitive industry. It will also share how it has been representing independent practices in the ongoing CMA investigation.

On Thursday, FIVP member Steve Carter will be available to discuss how veterinary surgeons and nurses can pursue practice ownership.

FIVP will also be offering independent practices three months of free membership if they sign up at the stand.

Rita Dingwall, FIVP business development manager, said: "It's a wonderful opportunity to discuss our representation in the CMA enquiry and connect with like-minded individuals who share our passion for independent practice."
