BSAVA Manual of Practical Veterinary Nursing
Formerly BSAVA Manual of Veterinary Nursing

Edited by
Elizabeth Mullineaux and Marie Jones

The BSAVA Manual of Practical Veterinary Nursing is a must have for student veterinary nurses and animal nursing assistants. Both practical and easy to follow, it is an incredibly useful resource.

The book uses a clear and simple format, with illustrations, tables and photographs to clarify and build upon points.

It demonstrates the diversity of duties undertaken by VNs and therefore provides information on a variety of situations, reflecting the ever-expanding role of the nurse in practice.

Particularly interesting is the chapter on ‘Traige and Emergency Nursing’. This section of the book gives clear guidance on assessing and dealing with emergencies, providing useful advice. The notes on triage are of key benefit to the reception team at the forefront of any veterinary practice as they are often the first point of call to anxious owners.

The chapters on ‘Diagnostic Imaging Techniques’ and ‘Medical Nursing’ are also very clear and useful in refreshing key information.

In fact, the whole book is very helpful for student and training VNs who wish to stimulate their learning and revise key topics. As it promotes on the back of the book, the manual covers the requirements of the NOS standards for trainee VNS and provides a practical accompaniment to the theory based BSAVA Textbook of Veterinary Nursing.

Covering topics such as wound management, dressing and bandages, practical fluid therapy and client communication, as well as introducing other issues such as care and monitoring inpatients, this book also supports qualified nurses – allowing them to improve in their capabilities.

In all, this manual is certainly an essential reference tool for daily use in practice.

Defra shares new Sanitary and Phytosanitary guidance

News Story 1
Defra has published guidance for the vet sector ahead of a proposed UK-EU Sanitary and Phytosanitary agreement.

The agreement, which will change the movement and trade of animals and related products, could see reductions in checks, paperwork and certification. As well as describing regulatory developments, the advice highlights the importance of animal ID, registration and traceability in disease control and other compliance arrangements.

The guidance can be found here. More detail is expected as negotiations progress.

Lords Committee opens Pet Parasite Medication inquiry

The House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee will launch its inquiry into Pet Parasite Medication (PPM) on Wednesday (3 June).

Focusing on treatments containing fipronil and imidacloprid, the inquiry will seek to understand distribution pathways and the impacts of PPM use and non-use on biodiversity and human health. It will also cover current regulation, monitoring, and the potential implications for pets and their owners.

The committee will hear evidence from environmental non-governmental organisations and research institutes. The public can follow the proceedings live on Parliament TV or in person in the Palace of Westminster.
