New veterinary nursing qualifications available |
Central Qualifications (CQ) has announced that the Level 2 Diploma for Veterinary Nursing Assistants and the Level 2 Diploma in Animal Nursing are now available for delivery in academic year 2013/14. |
Diploma for Veterinary Nursing Assistants (DipVNA)
The DipVNA can be taught on its own or as part of the Level 2 Nursing Assistants in a Veterinary Environment Apprenticeship Framework.
The qualification prepares students for a career as a veterinary nursing assistant by giving them the opportunity to gain the knowledge and practical skills necessary to work safely and competently in a veterinary environment. Students can undertake this qualification on a full or part-time basis at CQ approved Centres.
The DipVNA consists of eight units, with an estimated learning time of 570 hours (57 credits), and practical learning is assisted by use of the Central Skills Log (CSL).
As well as studying animal anatomy and physiology, and the principles of animal handling and care, students are also taught key administrative skills during the course. The DipVNA also contains units that link through to the Diploma in Animal Nursing and, in turn, enables progression onto the Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing.

Diploma in Animal Nursing (DipAN)
The DipAN is a comprehensive qualification designed to support those who wish to pursue a career as an animal nurse, whilst additionally providing a pathway to the Diploma in Veterinary Nursing.
The qualification comprises a balance of practice-based learning and theoretical teaching, and is taught on a full or part-time basis at CQ approved Centres.
In addition to the principles of supporting the care of hospitalised animals, medicine supply, diagnostics and emergency care, students are taught a range of practical skills – such as client care, communication and managing working relationships.
The DipAN consists of thirteen Level 2 units and five Level 3 units, with an estimated total learning time of 1,650 hours (165 credits). Students who undertake this qualification are well placed to go on to the Diploma in Veterinary Nursing as most of the units provide a direct progression pathway. Similarly to other CQ qualifications, practical learning is assisted by use of the CSL.
